On Friday evening, February 19, 2010, many members, their family, children, and friends, took part in the 62nd Annual Town of Penetanguishene Winterama Rotary Parade. TTLC entered a float constructed with great savvy by a number of members and from a host of materials gathered with great savvy from all over the Township. Special thanks to Tyler Pauze for creating (from sheet metal) the "GO CANADA GO" banner and the OLYMPIC RINGS seen in the pictures below. And special thanks to Carrie and Mike Casscagnette for providing a SOUND SYSTEM. And again special thanks to Shane Martin, our torch bearer (see below). We even had a past Olympian on our float: Angela Schmidt-Foster. Following the parade, all were invited to the home of Lions John & Fran for coffee, hot chocolate, marshmellows, s'mores, and cake (Fran's birthday!)... AND A BONFIRE. Adults, teens, and kids all had a blast! The weather throughout the event was exceptionally pleasent for this time of year: clear sky, quarter moon, stars, and temperature around zero Celsius. | *Penetang King Chosen to Carry Olympic Flame 12/29/09 01:12 PM (EST) By Mike Dodd PENETANGUISHENE – Shane Martin has enjoyed some significant moments in his young life, but the biggest is still ahead of him. The Coldwater-area resident and Georgian College student will carry the Olympic torch when it passes through Elmvale on Dec. 29 on its way to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympics. “I’m still in shock,” said the 19-year-old member of the Penetang Kings Junior C club. “I can’t wait to get my hands on the torch.” Martin’s Olympic memories revolve around the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City, where Canada’s men’s and women’s hockey teams struck gold on the ice. He watched parts of those Olympics while attending classes at Coldwater Public School. “Not being in Vancouver, this is a great way to feel part of the Olympics,” said Martin. mdodd@simcoe.com Coaches' Corner King thrilled by torch run ELMVALE – Coldwater resident and Penetang Kings player Shane Martin ran with the Olympic torch through Elmvale on Tuesday. “It was an absolutely incredible experience. To get the flame and to hold it is like nothing I have experienced before,” said the 20-year-old. Martin was accompanied by his uncle Don Martin, an OPP officer who was part of the security detail guarding the flame and the runners. “When I woke up Tuesday morning, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on (the torch),” said the younger Martin. He was one of three torchbearers who ran the flame through Elmvale. While not an Elmvale native, Martin said he could sense the crowd was cheering him, providing an added thrill. “Having my family on hand was also a big part of it.” Author: Mike Dodd Date: Dec 30, 2009 |
